The world outside can be overwhelming and chaotic enough to make you want to run and hide for days on end. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, so it’s no wonder stress and anxiety have become all too rampant in our society. That’s why more than ever it’s essential to take the time to create a calming environment in your home where you can unwind and relax.
If you’ve been following my move to Miami over social media, you might have noticed I’ve been putting in a little extra care and effort when it comes to decorating my space. My home is meant to be my sanctuary where I can escape whatever noise is lurking outside my door, and so I really wanted to ensure every corner of my space provided that comfort and calm.
Through working with a designer (@courtneychiltoncreative), I was able to achieve exactly that, and it turns out there is actual scientific proof as to why you should strive to create a space that promotes de-stressing. That’s why I wanted to share the tips I’ve learned when it comes to inviting peace into your property, in hopes that you’ll work to incorporate wellbeing in even more areas of your life!
1. Declutter and Organize
One of the easiest ways to create a calming environment is to declutter and organize your space. Start by getting rid of any unnecessary items that are taking up space and causing clutter. Donate or throw away items that you no longer need or use, and organize the things you do decide to keep. When you have a clean and organized space, it’s easier to relax and focus on the things that matter most.
2. Incorporate calming colours
Colours can have a significant impact on your mood and emotions, so it’s essential to choose shades and palettes that promote a sense of calmness and tranquility. Neutral colours like beige, grey, and white are known to be calming and can help create a peaceful atmosphere. Soft pastel colours like light blue, lavender, and green can also be soothing and relaxing if you’re looking to brush a bit brighter!
3. Incorporate Natural Elements
Bringing nature into your home can also help create a calming environment. Adding plants, flowers, or a water feature can create a sense of tranquillity and promote relaxation. Yes, this includes fake plants… Nobody’s judging you for not being able to keep your greens alive, that’s what faux succulents are for. You can also use natural materials like wood, stone, or bamboo in your decor to create a natural and calming atmosphere, and give off that popular Scandinavian aesthetic – win, win!
4. Reduce Noise and Distractions
Over-stimulation can be a real hindrance when it comes to finding peace and calm in your environment, which is why noise and distractions can be a significant source of stress and anxiety. So it’s important to reduce them as much as possible by using soundproofing materials or curtains to block out external noise, and turning off any unnecessary electronics. If you have children or pets, try creating a designated play area where they can have fun and be their noisy selves while keeping the rest of the house peaceful and quiet.
5. Create a Cozy Atmosphere
Adding comfortable furniture, soft lighting, and cozy textiles like sherpa blankets and fluffy pillows can also create a calming and cozy vibe in your home. Use warm and inviting lighting like candles or dimmer switches to create a relaxing ambiance, and choose soft and comfortable furniture that you can sink into and relax. Doesn’t this sound perfect? I’d move into whatever space we’re envisioning here!
