If you follow me on social media, you’re well aware of the multitude of setbacks it seems like I’ve been encountering lately. Actually, not even “it seems like”, because I genuinely have been. And I’ll admit, it’s been hard to keep my head up and maintain an even level mindset during it all. Because sometimes it just feels like life’s out to get me… In the least menacing of ways.
I’ve realized though that it’s inevitable you will face challenges at some point in your life. (Mine just happened to be stacked up and wrapped up in a pretty little bow all at once). From minor setbacks to major obstacles that seem insurmountable, it’s a part of our existence as human beings. Which is exactly why the way you respond to these challenges makes all the difference.
So, if you’re like me and feeling generally overwhelmed by a challenge (or seven), here are some tips to help you stay positive and keep moving forward. Because I promise, what lies on the other side will all be worth it. We love a good life test!
1. Reframe the challenge
The way you think about a challenge can greatly impact your ability to overcome it. Instead of seeing a challenge as an obstacle, try to reframe it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this experience?” or “How can I use this challenge to become a better person?” This shift in mindset can help you stay positive and motivated, even in the face of difficulty, which is when you need it most.
2. Focus on the present moment
When facing a challenge, it’s easy to get caught up in worrying about the future or dwelling on the past. However, this can be counterproductive and can make you feel even more stressed and overwhelmed (no thank you!). Instead, try to focus on the present moment and take things one step at a time. Break the challenge down into smaller, manageable tasks, and focus on completing each one to the best of your ability. You’ve got this!
3. Practice self-care
Putting yourself first is essential when facing a challenge. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, keeping your nutrition in check, and exercising regularly. It’s amazing what some time out in nature can do for you. Additionally, take time to do things you genuinely enjoy, like reading a book, listening to music or a podcast, or hanging out with your favourite people. These little actions will help to calm your nervous system and alieviate the stress and anxiety surrounding you. Practicing self-care can help you feel more resilient and better equipped to handle whatever challenges come your way.
4. Seek support
Facing a challenge alone can be daunting, so don’t be afraid to seek support from others. Remember those friends you’re going to hangout with to calm your nervous system? Talk to them; confide in whoever it is you trust and can provide a listening ear or helpful advice. Alternatively, you might even want to consider reaching out to a professional counselor or therapist who can provide the unbiased guidance and support we’re sometimes looking for.
Practice gratitude
Even in the midst of a challenge, there are still things to be grateful for. Trust me, my gratitude journal is busting at the seams these days! So take the time each morning or night to reflect on what it is you’re thankful for, whether it’s a supportive friend, a speciality coffee from your favourite shop, or an Instagram-worthy sunset. Focusing on the good things in your life can help shift your perspective and keep you treading in the right head space.
Say it together now, “Facing challenges is a normal part of life!” The important part is how you approach them. A positive mindset – though often looked at as corny these days – can truly work wonders when overcoming whatever it is that bitch life tries to throw at you.
By reframing the challenge, focusing on the present moment, practicing self-care, seeking support, and practicing gratitude, you can find that positivity and resilience, even in the face of difficulty.
Just promise me you’ll remember this one thing: challenges are opportunities for growth and learning, and by keeping positive and motivated, you will overcome them and emerge stronger on the other side!
